There are a few factors you need to consider. The most important in this case are the ranged damage multiplier and the melee dmg modifier. Archers have a higher ranged dmg modifier and a lower melee dmg modifier. I knew these pre 3.0, but with the update they changed, but the principle likely remains the same.
