I've got a "C" code (1951) .300 Savage EG, with a serial number in the 700XXX range. From what I've been able to determine, Savage was just willy-nilly with the process of making their rifles. They probably made receivers, stacked from the back of the bin, and just reached in a grabbed one when they were going to make a rifle.As with all other types of firearms in the United States, shotguns must be engraved with a serial number by the manufacturer.
